About

These mementos commemorate my series of essays entitled ‘Community Memory’. Most broadly, the essays are about how new collaborative technologies can help us build more resilient home places by strengthening our relationships to each other.

I would be ecstatic if you took a look—and if you are so compelled, that you would collect a memento here to mark yourself a reader.

Mechanics

There are initially 30 ‘reader’ pieces available on the ethereum mainnet, limited to one per address. After this, minting will be limited to those who have been nominated. Each of the first 30 minters will be able to nominate 3 addresses (and each of those, 3 more—and so on) until we reach 150 total mints. If you'd like a memento but you don't know what any of that means, just get in touch—I can help!

If you find yourself particularly drawn to one of the essays, there are also some special pieces to represent each of the six essays—an edition of 6 for each. The beautiful art for these is by Alex White and they are available to anyone who mints one of the 150 ‘reader’ mementos, first come first served, and one total per ‘reader’. I will withhold 30 of the reader tokens and 1 of each of the essay pieces for future distribution.

Relationship

Once all of the essay pieces are collected, we will be considered to be sufficiently in relationship to move from a group of individual ‘readers’ to a ‘congregation’. The art for these mementos with change will reflect that—from a static image, to a map of our relationships. This series of essays is made living in their relationship to you (and between you)—and similarly, the image that represents our mementos responds to us.

Memory

Any member of the congregation has the ability to snapshot the current map of our relationships on the home page. This most-current snapshot will be the one referenced in the smartcontract and visible on NFT platforms. The shape of each previous snapshot can be recalled here on the 'memory' page.

Just as in our home places, each memory concerns the whole, but bears the perspective of the one who captures it. As such, this image can be updated continually, even when all mementos have been claimed. In fact, it is this personal act of committing to memory that affirms and perpetuates our community memory.

The memory page has also been made to hold a song to embody this memory. As our community grows and becomes connected, the song swells alongside us. Of course we are only playing pretend here, but these are the movements of a real community memory that we can employ at home.
